Q:
How to replace the fuel pump in a Mercury Grand Marquis? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the fuel pump in a 1995 or earlier model, start by siphoning any remaining fuel from the tank and relieving the fuel pressure. Then, disconnect the negative battery terminal, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, and disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector from the fuel pump/fuel level sender assembly. Using a brass punch or wood dowel, turn the lock ring counterclockwise to loosen it, and carefully remove the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank, discarding the old lock ring gasket. If you're reusing the original pump, remove the strainer, wash it in solvent, and reinstall it. If you're installing a new pump, it will come with a new strainer. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump and clean the mounting flange and tank surface. Reinstall the pump assembly in reverse, applying grease to the new seal ring for assembly. For 1996 and later models, remove the fuel tank and its mounting bolts, then lift out the fuel pump/fuel level sensor assembly carefully, protecting the float arm. Discard the old O-ring seal and inspect the fuel inlet strainer. If it's only slightly dirty, clean it gently; otherwise, replace the pump. Clean the mounting flange and tank surface, and use a new O-ring seal with a thin coat of heavy grease for installation. Follow the reverse procedure for reinstallation.
