    Q:
How to install a needle roller bearing as a clutch pilot bearing on Ford Fairmont? Posted by Customer
    A:
A needle roller bearing is used as a clutch pilot bearing on all vehicles, except for the 2.3 L models in which this bearing must be placed directly into the crankshaft with the seal end facing the transmission, and on others bearings must be installed in the correct position. First of all, first remove the transmission, clutch, pressure plate, and disc. The bearing can be pulled out with the help of a slide hammer or with particular Ford instruments which are equipped with puller. For installation of the new bearing, apply a small amount of lithium grease on the crankshaft opening so that it does not transfer to an extent that causes slippage of the clutch. The bearing is then installed in its relevant place and lightly hammered on, using a 1 inch, 12 point socket, and an extension bar, to the crankshaft so as not to compromise on it since it will lead to a quick failure of the crankshaft. And are all over, reinstall the clutch, pressure plate and transmission.

    Q:
What is the purpose and maintenance of the clutch pilot bearing on 1993-2011 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
The clutch pilot bearing is a needle roller type bearing fitted to the rear of the crankshaft as a fully assembled unit with built in grease for its lifetime and without requiring any further re-greasing. It is primarily mounted to support the front of the transmission input shaft, and should be checked whenever the clutch components are pulled out from the engine. Again since the trap is out of reach it may be difficult to determine its state of decay therefore if there is any doubt one must replace it with a new one. If the engine of the vehicle has been pulled out, some of these procedures are not followed. The bearing inspection should comprise seeking indications of great wear figure, scoring absent or inadequate, absence of grease or evident damage and dryness of bearing: all these point to their replacement after elimination of the transmission plus the clutch components. A small flashlight can be used to shine some light into the recess to enable one inspect it properly. The removal can be done by a special plate puller, among which there is an internal one connected to the slide hammer. To mount the new bearing just apply thin layer of lithium-based grease on the outer surface and then nail with the soft- faced hammer into the recess with its seal turned outward. Lastly, replace all clutch components, the transmission, and every other part which has been removed tightening all screws accordingly.

    Q:
What is the purpose of the clutch pilot bearing and how should it be inspected and replaced on Mercury Cougar? Posted by Customer
    A:
The clutch pilot bearing is a needle roller type bearing which is pressed into the rear of the crankshaft. The pilot bearing incorporates an O-ring seal which can't be replaced separately - if there is any evidence that the seal has been leaking, or if the bearing is dry, replace it. It is greased at the factory and does not require additional lubrication. Its primary purpose is to support the front of the transmission input shaft. The pilot bearing should be inspected whenever the clutch components are removed from the engine. Due to its inaccessibility, if you are in doubt as to its condition, replace it with a new one. Remove the transmission. Remove the clutch components. Inspect for any excessive wear, scoring, lack of grease, dryness or obvious damage. If any of these conditions are noted, the bearing should be replaced. A flashlight will be helpful to direct light into the recess. Removal can be accomplished with a special puller and slide hammer, but an alternative method also works very well. Find a solid steel bar which is slightly smaller in diameter than the bearing. Alternatives to a solid bar would be a wood dowel or a socket with a bolt fixed in place to make it solid. Check the bar for fit - it should just slip into the bearing with very little clearance. Pack the bearing and the area behind it (in the crankshaft recess) with heavy grease. Pack it tightly to eliminate as much air as possible. Insert the bar into the bearing bore and strike the bar sharply with a hammer which will force the grease to the back side of the bearing and push it out. Remove the bearing and clean all grease from the crankshaft recess. To install the new bearing, lightly lubricate the outside surface with lithium-based grease, then drive it into the recess with a soft-face hammer. The seal must face out. Install the clutch components, transmission and all other components removed previously, tightening all fasteners properly.

    Q:
How to inspect and replace the clutch pilot bearing on Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
    A:
The clutch pilot bearing is an LZ needle roller bearing retained on the end of the crankshaft by an O-ring, which cannot be replaced; if there is evidence of leakage or if the bearing is dry, then it has to be replaced with its O-ring towards the trans. Lubricated at the factory, it does not require further lubrication and mainly supplies the front of the transmission input shaft. Periodically, parts of the clutch are replaced, and whenever this is done, the clutch should be inspected; in case there is suspicion of its bad state, it should be replaced. Before disassembly of the transmission and clutch, there should be signs of wear, scoring, lack of grease or damage; in all these cases the clutch bearing must be changed. It can be pulled out by using the special puller and slide hammer or with the help of solid steel bar of appropriate size, which must be slightly less than the diameter of the bearing in order to fit it firmly. The bearing and the area behind it should be filled with that grease so as to expel air and a bar can then be hit with a hammer to impute pressure behind the bearing, which will in turn expel the grease. Post removal, degage the crankshaft recess and cover the new bearing lightly in lithium based grease before bounding it into the recess with a soft-faced hammer while ensuring that the seal forms the outer side. Last of all, replace the clutch components, the transmission, and all the parts which had been removed, make sure to tight all bolts and screws properly.
