    Q:
What is the importance of battery maintenance on Ford F-250? Posted by Customer
    A:
To begin work on the vehicle, turn off the engine and all accessories and remove the cable from the negative terminal. Sealed batteries do not require a check of the electrolyte or adding water. In batteries that need maintenance, ensure there is enough distilled water in each cell by inspecting its level of electrolyte. Investigate damage to battery condition, cable clamp, and positive terminal. Apply petroleum jelly or grease on top and tighten hold-down clamp bolt to prevent corrosion. Apply primer and paint to damaged metal parts then clean off corrosion with baking soda solution and water. If you keep the battery in a vehicle for charging purposes, remove cables. A good rating of a slow charger does not exceed 3 amperes. Over the twelve to sixteen-hour process of charging, lead covers should be removed from vent caps, connect charger leads onto battery posts while watching out for overheating.

    Q:
What precautions should be taken when working on or near a battery on Ford Bronco II? Posted by Customer
    A:
When performing work on or in proximity to the battery, take extra care not to inadvertently connect any tool between the negative and positive terminals, or make ground, as this causes shorting and possible severe electric shock. Fire and other sources of ignition such as smoking and spark should not come in contact with battery because has explosive gases. It is mandatory to hold on the battery using a hold-down device in order to avoid its movement and consequently acids leakage and corrosion. Daily or at least weekly visual check for cracks, leakage and overall corrosion is required and damaged batteries need to be replaced as quickly as possible. Before removing a battery, the negative terminal should be disconnected and then the positive one, next, the hold-down device should be loosened and then the battery should be removed. As the battery is removed, ensure that the battery tray is clean as well as free from rust and clear it if necessary. In installation, tighten the hold-down device but do not over tighten it as you connect the positive cable before the negative one. Non-sealed batteries need routine examination of the electrolyte level and replenishing with distilled water if needed, while a sealed battery needs to be checked with the assistance of the hydrometer that is installed on it. There is also need to ensure that battery terminal and cables are free from any form of corrosion and cleaning should be done at least once a year. In a case where the battery is not frequently used then removing the negative terminal during the period of storage is recommended. It is recommended for the electrolyte level to be controlled once a month and the addition of distilled water is necessary in freezing weather. Specific gravity tests can show battery charge and also reveal if there is swelling and if the cells are very high or very low, then they should be replaced. Battery terminals and cable clamps need to be cleaned at least once a year, the electrical connection must be good and dielectric grease can be also used to retard corrosion. In charging the battery, this should be done slowly in order not to over heat the battery and when the battery is being replaced, an amperage rating of the battery must be equivalent or higher than the original battery, to allow for the increased electrical resistance in the battery.

    Q:
How do you disconnect the battery on Ford Bronco? Posted by Customer
    A:
To disconnect the battery, start by disconnecting both cables from the battery terminals. It is important to use a battery terminal puller if necessary and always disconnect the negative cable first and hook it up last to avoid shorting the battery. Next, loosen the two battery hold-down clamp nuts to disengage the hold-down legs from the battery tray and remove the hold-down clamp as an assembly. Lift out the battery, using special straps or clamps if available to make the process easier. To install the battery, simply reverse the removal steps. Ensure that the battery cables and battery posts are free of corrosion and clean or replace them if necessary.

    Q:
How do you disconnect the battery on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
To disconnect the battery, first remove both cables, starting with the ground cable to avoid shorting. Remember, the vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles after reconnection for smooth operation. Next, remove the bolt and wedge to lift out the heavy battery, using lifting straps if needed. If necessary, remove the battery tray bolts for component access. Reinstallation is the reverse of removal.

    Q:
How to disconnect and remove a battery from a Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect both cables from the battery terminals. This can be done by removing the cable from a battery post with a wrench. Sometimes special battery pliers are required for this procedure if corrosion has caused deterioration of the nut hex. Always remove the ground cable first and hook it up last. If equipped, remove the heat shield from the top of the battery. Remove the bolt and wedge from the battery tray. This involves removing the bolt and the battery hold down clamp which secures the base of the battery to the battery tray. Lift out the battery, but be careful as it's heavy. Special lifting straps that attach to the battery posts are available at auto parts stores. Lifting and moving the battery is much easier if you use one. If necessary for access to other components, remove the bolts that secure the battery tray. On 1995 and later models, the battery tray is mounted on the driver's side of the vehicle and is fastened by three retaining bolts. On 1994 and earlier models, the battery tray is mounted on the passenger side of the vehicle and is fastened by four retaining bolts, two upper and two lower retaining bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal.
