Regular maintenance of windshield wipers is crucial for optimal performance. Wiper blades should be washed regularly with a mild detergent solution to remove road film that can accumulate and affect efficiency. Periodic inspection of the windshield wiper and blade assembly is essential to catch any signs of rubber deterioration or cracking. If the rubber is found to be hardened or cracked, prompt replacement of the wiper blades is recommended. Additionally, check and tighten the fasteners of the wiper mechanism during inspections. For Tridon blades, park the wiper blades in a convenient position, lift the blade slightly, press the spring lock to release the blade, and replace it with a new assembly. Early Tricoblades replacement involves lifting the wiper arm, prying one end of the element out, sliding the new element into retaining tabs, and securing the blade back onto the wiper arm. For later Tricoblades, park the wiper blades, use a screwdriver to release the blade, separate the element from the retaining tab, insert the new element into the tabs, and secure it before locking the blade onto the pivot pin.

Raise the blade end of the front wiper arm off of the windshield. Move the slide latch away from the pivot shaft. The wiper-arm can now be removed from the shaft without the use of any tools. Be sure the wipers are in the parked position, and the blade assembly is in its correct position. Push the main head over the pivot shaft. Hold the main arm head onto the pivot shaft while raising the blade end of the wiper arm and push the slide latch into the lock under the pivot shaft head. Lower the blade to the windshield. If the blade does not lower to the windshield, the slide latch is not completely in place. For the rear wiper, raise the windshield wiper blade/arm off of the glass and place it into the service position. Using a small, flat bladed prytool, release the retaining clip at the base of the windshield wiper pivot arm. Carefully pry the wiper arm from the shaft. Ensure that the wiper motor pivot shaft is in the park position. Position the wiper arm over the shaft and firmly push it on until it stops. Lower the wiper blade/arm against the glass. The blade is properly positioned when it firmly contacts the wind-shield wiper arm stop. If it does not, remove the arm again and reposition it so that it does.

Wet the windshield, turn the wipers on, allow them to cycle several times, then shut them off. An uneven wiper pattern or streaks over clean glass indicate that the blades should be replaced.

Detach the assembly by lifting the release lever or pressing down with the screwdriver then pulling the wiper blade off the wiper arm pin. To install the blade assembly, push it onto the pin until it snaps into place. Be sure that the blade assembly is securely attached to the wiper arm. At one end of the rubber blade element, insert a small screwdriver between the blade and the metal backing strip. Press down and in, then twist the screwdriver clockwise to release the element from the retaining claw. Slide the blade element out of the retaining claws until the element is completely detached from the frame. To install the element, slide the metal backing strip into the retaining claws starting with the second claw from either end. Continue sliding the element up to the element stops, then secure the element by twisting the backing strip into the end claws. Make sure that all the claws are locked onto the metal backing strip before installing the blade on the wiper arm.
