Refer to the appropriate sections and install the lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, timing chain/sprocket, timing chain cover, and valve covers.

Remove the valve covers and the timing chain cover.

Compress the tensioner with a C-clamp, insert two pins to lock it in position, and then remove the tensioner. Repeat for the opposite cylinder head.

The purpose is to determine the extent of cam lobe wear before removing the camshaft.

Lobe lift can be obtained by measuring the camshaft lobe height and the base circle; the difference between the two measurements equals lobe lift.

Before starting the engine, change the oil, install a new oil filter, and refill the cooling system.

4. Remove the camshaft sprockets, locking the camshaft in position with a special tool before loosening the sprocket bolt. CAUTION: Don't mix up the sprockets; make an identification mark on each sprocket using paint for correct reassembly. 5. Mark the camshaft cap clusters with front and rear indications for both the left and right cylinder heads. 6. Loosen the bearing cap bolts only 1/4-turn at a time, following the reverse of the tightening sequence, until they can be removed by hand. 7. Remove the caps and lift the camshaft off the cylinder head, tapping lightly under the camshaft caps if necessary. 8. Repeat this procedure for the remaining camshaft.
