    Q:
How do you remove the camshaft from the engine block for the 1993 Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Thread a long bolt into the camshaft that can be used to pull the camshaft from the engine block and also provide leverage to support the camshaft so the lobes don't get nicked or gouged on the bearings as it's withdrawn. Remove the camshaft carefully to avoid damaging the bearings.

    A:
Mount a dial indicator on the engine, position the plunger in-line with and resting on the first push rod, zero the dial indicator, then slowly turn the crankshaft until the indicator needle stops and begins to move in the opposite direction to find the maximum cam lobe lift.

    Q:
How do you check the oil clearance for each camshaft bearing for the 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
    a) Clean the bearing surfaces and the camshaft journals with lacquer thinner or acetone. b) Carefully lay the camshaft(s) in place in the cylinder head. Don't install the rocker arms or lash adjusters and don't use any lubrication. c) Lay a strip of Plastigage on each journal. d) Install the camshaft caps. e) Remove the bolts and detach the caps. f) Compare the width of the crushed Plastigage to the scale on the Plastigage envelope to determine the oil clearance. g) If the clearance is greater than specified, and the diameter of any journal is less than specified, replace the camshaft. If the journal diameters are within specifications but the oil clearance is too great, the cylinder head is worn and must be replaced.
