Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector.

The next step is to drain the cooling system.

Lubricate the new valve stem oil seals and install them to the cylinder head, pressing them in squarely using a deep socket of suitable diameter. Note that the intake and exhaust seals are usually different colors: green for the intake valves and red for the exhaust valves.

1. Examine the valve springs for signs of damage and discoloration, and measure their free length. If any springs are damaged, distorted, or have lost their tension, obtain a complete set of new springs. 2. Stand each spring on a flat surface and check it for squareness. 3. Check the retainers and keepers for obvious wear and cracks. Any questionable parts should be replaced. 4. Check the cam followers.

The Number 1 valve is nearest to the timing belt end of the engine, and the intake and exhaust valve positions can be deduced from the installed positions of the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Ensure that there is nothing still attached to the head that would interfere with lifting it off, and move any wiring or hoses aside as necessary.

If only one cylinder head requires removal, disregard the steps for the other cylinder head. For the rear cylinder head, you only need to remove the timing chain, camshafts, and rocker arms from the rear cylinder head; the front can remain installed. If the front cylinder head must be removed, you must first remove the rear timing chain for access to the front chain, while the rear camshafts and rocker arms can remain installed.

Support it securely on jackstands and drain the cooling system.

Remove the intake duct from the air filter housing.

1. Ensure the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block are perfectly clean. 2. Check the mating surfaces for nicks, deep scratches, and other damage. 3. Use a straightedge to check for warpage of the cylinder head gasket surface. 4. Clean the mating surfaces with a clean shop towel and solvent as needed. 5. Ensure the two locating dowels are in position in the cylinder block and that all cylinder head bolt holes are free of contamination. 6. Install new cylinder head gaskets on the block, over the locating dowels. 7. Carefully install the cylinder heads, ensuring they fit properly over the locating dowels. 8. Install new cylinder head bolts and turn down by hand until snug.
