How to remove and install a fuel filter in a Ford Bronco? Posted by Customer
A:
Relieve the fuel system pressure and loosen the fuel filler cap. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. If necessary, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands with the front end slightly higher than the rear. Locate the fuel filter on the inside of the left-side frame rail. Remove the filter-to-fuel line retainer clips if equipped. Remove the fuel lines from the filter. Remove the nuts retaining the filter bracket to the frame rail and remove the filter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Turn the key on and off several times to pressurize the system. Check the filter for leaks. Don't forget to reset the inertia switch.

Q:
What are the precautions and how to replace fuel filters in Ford Bronco? Posted by Customer
A:
Fuel filters in carbureted models must be replaced according to the maintenance interval suggestions and when a blockage in the fuel line occurs due to excessive foreign material in the fuel. Given the volatile nature of gasoline, precautions should be exercised when the fuel filter is replaced. This work should be done on a cool engine, away from open flames and not within an enclosed area. Any spills should be cleaned up immediately. Fuel filters are located in different places depending on the year, engine size and weight rating of the vehicle. Most can be found in-line somewhere between the fuel pump and the carburetor. If a fuel filter is located in-line between the carburetor and the fuel pump, it is usually connected with rubber hoses. After removing the filter, drain it and discard it in a non-incendiary refuse container. Replace the filter with an exact duplicate replacement and push it into new rubber connecting hoses. Tighten all clamps, start the vehicle and check for leaks. If the filter is the type located in the inlet of the carburetor, first detach the line leading to the inlet. Carefully unscrew the carburetor inlet filter unit from the carburetor. To reinstall, simply thread a new filter into the carburetor and tighten securely. If an internal filter is located inside the carburetor inlet, the spring, gasket and filter must be removed. Assemble the new filter, seal and spring in the reverse order of their removal. Some fuel filters are located in the bottom of the fuel pump. To remove this type of filter, unscrew the canister from the bottom of the fuel pump. Slowly lower the canister and filter assembly off the bottom of the fuel pump. Empty the fuel into an approved gasoline container, then remove the filter and gasket assembly. Insert a new filter and gasket assembly. Screw the filter and filter housing assembly back on to the base of the fuel pump. Start the vehicle and check the filter and surrounding area for leaks.

Q:
How to replace and prime the fuel filter for a Ford Bronco II 2.3L engine? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect both battery ground cables for a 2.2L engine. Disconnect and cap the fuel filter inlet and outlet lines. Remove the two bolts/nuts attaching the priming pump to the bracket and remove the pump. Remove the two bolts attaching the bracket to the engine and remove the bracket. Install the fuel filter mounting bracket on the engine. Install the priming pump assembly on the bracket. Install the fuel filter lines and clamps. Connect both battery ground cables. Run the engine and check for fuel leaks. For a 2.3L diesel engine, the fuel filter is the paper element cartridge type and the conditioner housing includes an air vent screw to bleed air from the fuel lines. Remove the rear bracket shield, attaching bolts, and unplug the electrical connectors attached to the shield. Remove the rectangular filter element cartridge by unlatching hold-down clamps and pull element cartridge rearward until it clears the base. Clean the filter mounting pad. Install the new element by pushing straight on after lining up filter element grommet holes with corresponding inlet/outlet tubes on the base. Snap on the clamps. Install the rear bracket shield, tighten the bolts to specification and plug the electrical connections back together. For a 2.3L engine frame-mounted inline fuel filter, pinch off the fuel hose to the rear of the inline filter using a rubber coated clamp or other suitable device to prevent fuel from siphoning from the tank. Remove the two hose clamps closest to the inline filter and remove filter. Install replacement filter and two new clamps. Remove the hose pinch-off clamp. To purge air and prime fuel filter for a 2.3L engine, turn the ignition switch ON to activate the electric fuel boost pump. Loosen the air vent plug on the conditioner housing until fuel flows from the air vent plug hole free of bubbles. Tighten the air vent plug securely. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Q:
How is the fuel filter mounted on a Ford Escape? Posted by Customer
A:
The fuel filter is mounted under the vehicle on the right side, in front of the gas tank. Relieve the fuel system pressure. If necessary, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Inspect the fittings at both ends of the filter to see if they're clean. If more than a light coaling of dust is present, clean the fittings before proceeding. Release the clips holding the fuel lines to the filter using a small screwdriver to pry off the fuel line fitting retaining clips at both ends of the filter - 2008 and earlier models. Detach the fuel hoses, one at a time, from the filter. Be prepared for fuel spillage. After the lines are detached, check the fittings for damage and distortion. If they were damaged in any way during removal, new ones must be used when the lines are reattached to the new filter. If new clips are packaged with the filter, be sure to use them in place of the originals. Remove the fuel filter from the mounting clamp, while noting the direction the fuel filter is installed. Install the new filter in the same direction. Carefully push each hose onto the filter until it's seated against the collar on the fitting, then install the clips. Make sure the clips are securely attached to the hose fittings - if they come off, the hoses could back off the filter and a fire could result! Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Q:
How to replace the fuel filter on a Ford Crown Victoria? Posted by Customer
A:
On 1996 and earlier models, the fuel filter is located under the vehicle on the inside of the left frame rail. On 1997 and later models, it is located under the vehicle on the inside of the right frame rail. Inspect the hose fittings at both ends of the filter to see if they're clean. If there is more than a light coating of dust present, clean the fittings before proceeding. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Removal of the hairpin clip from each fitting is a two-stage procedure. First, spread the two clip legs apart about 1/8-inch to disengage them, then push in on them. Pull on the other end of the clip to detach it from the fitting. Use a small screwdriver to pry the fuel fitter line clip off. Once both hairpin clips are released, grasp the fuel hoses, one at a time, and pull them straight off the filter. Be prepared for fuel spillage. After the hoses have been detached, check the clips for damage and distortion. If they were damaged in any way during removal, new ones must be used when the hoses are reattached to the new filter. If new clips are packaged with the filter, be sure to use them in place of the originals. Remove the bolts and detach the filter and bracket assembly. On 1988 through 1994 models, note which way the arrow is pointing - the new filter must be installed the same way. Use a screwdriver to loosen the clamp and remove the filter from the bracket. On 1995 and later models, the filter and bracket are a one-piece unit and cannot be separated. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing in the right direction and tighten the clamp. On all models, install the filter/bracket assembly and tighten the bolts securely. Carefully push each hose onto the filter until it's seated against the collar on the fitting, then install the hairpin clips. Make sure the clips are securely attached to the hose fittings - if they come off, the hoses could back off the filter and a fire could result! Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Q:
How do you replace the fuel filter on Lincoln Mark VII? Posted by Customer
A:
On carbureted models, the fuel filter is located at the carburetor. To replace it, start by removing the air cleaner assembly and placing rags under the fuel inlet fittings to catch any spilled fuel. On some models, the filter is mounted on the outside of the carburetor, so you'll need to loosen the screw clamp, disconnect the rubber hose, unscrew the fitting, and detach the filter. On other models, the filter is located inside the carburetor, so you'll need to hold the large fuel inlet fitting with a wrench, loosen the fitting at the end of the metal fuel line, unscrew the fuel inlet tube nut, and remove the gasket, filter, and spring. Install the new filter, gasket, and spring, secure it with the fuel inlet fitting, and tighten everything securely. For fuel-injected models, the fuel filter is located under the vehicle on the inside of either the left or right frame rail, near the fuel tank. Before replacing it, inspect the hose fittings for cleanliness and relieve the fuel system pressure. The removal process will depend on the type of fittings used. For hairpin clip fittings, spread the clip legs apart, push in on them, and detach the clip from the fitting. Then, pull the fuel hoses straight off the filter. For push connect fittings, remove the safety clip, twist the fitting to break the seal, use a special fuel line disconnect tool to release the fitting, and pull the fuel line from the filter. Inspect the fittings for damage and replace if necessary. To install the new filter, push the fitting onto it until it clicks into place. For all models, remove the filter and retainer from the bracket, remove the rubber cushion, and install the new filter with the arrow pointing toward the large open end of the retainer and in the direction of fuel flow. Finally, start the engine and check for leaks.

How to replace the fuel filter in Mercury Lynx? Posted by Customer
A:
For carbureted models, begin by removing the air cleaner housing on top of the carburetor to access the fuel filter, which is threaded into the carburetor body. Place a rag under the filter, unscrew the line while holding the filter hex with a back-up wrench, and use a flare-nut wrench if available to prevent rounding off the fuel line fitting hex. Unscrew the filter or fuel inlet fitting from the carburetor, apply threadlock and sealer to the filter threads, hand-screw the filter into the carburetor, and tighten it snugly with a wrench. Apply motor oil to the fuel line fitting threads, hand-thread the line into the filter, and tighten the fuel line securely. Reinstall the air cleaner housing. For fuel-injected models, relieve the fuel system pressure and locate the fuel filter in the right rear corner of the engine compartment. Inspect the hose fittings, remove the hairpin clips, and pull off the fuel hoses while plugging both ends. Check the hairpin clips for damage, note the arrow on the filter for direction, loosen the clamp screw, and detach the filter from the bracket. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing in the correct direction, tighten the clamp screw, carefully push each hose onto the filter, and secure with hairpin clips. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
