Turn the key on and off several times to pressurize the system. Check the filter for leaks. Don't forget to reset the inertia switch.

After removing the filter, drain it and discard it in a non-incendiary refuse container. Replace the filter with an exact duplicate replacement and push it into new rubber connecting hoses. Tighten all clamps, start the vehicle, and check for leaks.

Note which way the arrow on the filter is pointing - the new filter must be installed the same way.

On models with the filter mounted on the outside of the carburetor, you'll need to loosen the screw clamp, disconnect the rubber hose, unscrew the fitting, and detach the filter.

The fuel filter is located at the carburetor.

To replace the fuel filter on carbureted models, start by removing the air cleaner assembly and placing rags under the fuel inlet fittings to catch any spilled fuel.

For carbureted models, start by removing the air cleaner housing to access the filter. Place a rag underneath and disconnect the fuel line(s) from the filter, either by sliding clamps on hose connections or unscrewing inverted flare connections.

If necessary, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands with the front end slightly higher than the rear.

If a fuel filter is located in-line between the carburetor and the fuel pump, it is usually connected with rubber hoses.

The inline reservoir type fuel filter should last the life of the vehicle under normal driving conditions. If the filter does need to be replaced, proceed as follows: 1. Shut the engine OFF. Depressurize the fuel system. 2. Raise and support the vehicle safely. 3. Remove the push connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter. Install new retainer clips in each push connect fitting. 4. Remove the filter from the bracket by loosening the filter retaining clamp enough to allow the filter to pass through. 5. Install the filter in the bracket, ensuring proper direction of flow as noted by the arrow. Tighten the clamp to 15-25 inch lbs. (1.7-2.8 N). 6. Install the push connect fittings at both ends of the filter. 7. Lower the vehicle. 8. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Install the replacement filter and two new clamps. Remove the hose pinch-off clamp.

Inspect the hose fittings at both ends of the filter to see if they're clean. If necessary, clean the fittings.

The fuel system pressure must be relieved before removing the fuel filter. Refer to Chapter 4 for instructions.
