Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the transmission. Inspect the transmission for leaks, and consider replacing the front pump seal/O-ring if necessary. Look for factory paint marks indicating driveplate-to-crankshaft alignment; if absent, create your own marks to ensure correct alignment during reassembly. Remove the bolts securing the driveplate to the crankshaft, using a screwdriver to jam the driveplate if it turns. Carefully remove the driveplate, supporting it while taking out the last bolt, and note that a reinforcement/mounting plate between the engine block and driveplate does not need to be removed unless being replaced. If the reinforcement plate was removed, reinstall it correctly for starter installation. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the driveplate and crankshaft, replacing the crankshaft rear seal if it is leaking. Check for any cracked, broken, or missing ring gear teeth and replace the driveplate if necessary. Install the driveplate to the engine, aligning it with the marks made during removal, and apply a sealant with Teflon to the threads of the bolts before tightening them to the specified torque while wedging a screwdriver through the starter motor opening to prevent the driveplate from turning. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.

Remove the bolts securing the driveplate to the crankshaft, using a screwdriver to jam the driveplate if the crankshaft turns. Carefully support the driveplate while removing the last bolt and clean it to eliminate grease and oil, checking for cracked or broken ring gear teeth. Lay the driveplate on a flat surface to check for warpage with a straightedge, and inspect the mating surfaces of the driveplate and crankshaft. If the crankshaft rear seal is leaking, replace it before positioning the driveplate against the crankshaft, ensuring alignment with the marks made during removal. Some engines may have an alignment dowel or staggered bolt holes for correct installation; apply Teflon sealant to the bolt threads before installation. Use a screwdriver through the starter motor opening to prevent the driveplate from turning while tightening the bolts to the specified torque, and complete the installation by reversing the removal steps.

Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the transmission. If there's a leak, it's a good time to replace the front pump seal/O-ring for automatic transmissions. For manual transmission vehicles, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc, and check or replace the clutch components and pilot bearing. Look for factory paint marks indicating flywheel-to-crankshaft alignment; if absent, use a center-punch or paint to create alignment marks on both the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft. Remove the bolts securing the flywheel/driveplate to the crankshaft, using a prybar or flywheel-holding tool as necessary to prevent the crankshaft from turning. Carefully remove the flywheel/driveplate, supporting it while removing the last bolt. Clean the flywheel with brake cleaner, inspecting for cracks, rivet grooves, burned areas, and score marks, and check for damaged ring gear teeth. Lay the flywheel on a flat surface to check for warpage with a straightedge. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft, replacing the crankshaft rear seal if it's leaking. Position the flywheel/driveplate against the crankshaft, aligning the marks made during removal, and apply Teflon thread sealant to the bolt threads before installation. Use a flywheel-holding tool or a screwdriver to keep the flywheel/driveplate from turning while tightening the bolts to the specified torque. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.

Since the driveplate is fairly heavy, be sure to support it while removing the last bolt.

Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the driveplate and the crankshaft. If the crankshaft rear seal is leaking, replace it before reinstalling the driveplate.

There are six flywheel retaining bolts on REP engines and eight on WEP engines.

Remove the bolts that secure the flywheel/driveplate to the crankshaft. On automatic transmission driveplates, insert a prybar through a hole to keep the crankshaft from turning when loosening/tightening the bolts. If the crankshaft turns, use a flywheel-holding tool or wedge a screwdriver through the starter opening to jam the flywheel.

Remove the driveplate from the crankshaft.
