The upper bearing insert should be placed in the connecting rod - The lower bearing insert should be placed in the cap - Ensure proper tab alignment without lubrication.

Measure piston ring side clearance and piston-to-bore clearance, replacing pistons if needed.

After addressing the ridges, you should turn the engine upside-down with the crankshaft facing up.

After the cylinder ridges have been removed, turn the engine upside-down so the crankshaft is facing up.

If the clearance is not correct, check for dirt or oil between the bearing inserts and the connecting rod or cap, and recheck the journal diameter. If the Plastigage was wider at one end, the journal may be tapered.

If the pistons and cylinder walls aren't damaged or worn excessively, and if the engine block is not rebored, new pistons won't be necessary. Normal piston wear appears as even vertical wear on the piston thrust surfaces and slight looseness of the top ring in its groove. New piston rings should always be used when an engine is rebuilt.

If the connecting rod has studs with attaching nuts (rather than cap bolts), slip a short length of plastic or rubber hose over each connecting rod cap bolt to protect the crankshaft journal and cylinder wall as the piston is removed.

a) Keep the back sides of the bearing inserts and the insides of the connecting rods and caps perfectly clean. b) Ensure the correct piston/rod assembly for each cylinder. c) The notches or mark on the piston must face the FRONT of the engine. d) Lubricate the cylinder walls with clean oil. e) Lubricate the bearing faces when installing the rod caps after the oil clearance has been checked.

Corrosion of the piston, in the form of small pits, indicates that coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber or the crankcase. The cause must be corrected to prevent the problem from persisting in the rebuilt engine.
