    Q:
What are the signs of a failure in the water pump on Mercury Mountaineer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Water pump failure can cause engine damage due to overheating. If the pump seal fails, coolant leaks from the front cover in V6 models or the water pump housing in V8 models. The water pump is located in the front cover for V6 engines and in a housing in the engine block for V8 engines. Water pumps have weep holes that can be checked for leaks with a flashlight. If there's heavy brown staining or visible coolant, the pump needs replacing. If the pump shaft bearings fail, a howling sound may be heard. Shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley. Don't confuse drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, with pump bearing failure. A quick pump check is to turn on the heater; if the pump is failing, it won't circulate hot water efficiently.

    Q:
How to check and replace a water pump on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
When the engine is hot, you should press the upper radiator hose to check if the water pump is alright. A flashlight can be used to find leaks through weep or vent holes. At the front of the engine listen for a howling sound and then check for shaft wear. Before removing the fan, pulley and hoses, drain the cooling system by disconnecting the battery since power will be shut off. Then go ahead and take out alternator only if necessary. Seal up every surface, attach a new pump with gasket, and tighten bolts. Lastly, after reinstalling all parts, fill up your system again ensuring that belt tension is ok when starting your car and run it while checking for any leaks.

    Q:
Are there any additional steps for the 2003 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Yes. For those models, you should also: 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system. 2. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. 3. Remove the drive belt, pulley, and hoses from the water pump. 4. Proceed to remove the water pump from the engine. 5. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine. 6. Compare the new pump to the old one and remove old gasket material. 7. Clean the engine and new water pump gasket mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. 8. Apply RTV sealant to the engine side of the new gasket and the gasket mating surface of the new pump. 9. Attach the pump and gasket to the engine, threading the bolts in finger-tight. 10. Install the remaining bolts, tighten them evenly in 1/4-turn increments, and reinstall any removed parts. 11. Refill the cooling system and check the drive belt tension before running the engine and checking for leaks.
