    Q:
What should be done after removing the oil seal for the 1998 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Clean the seal bore and check it for nicks or gouges. Also, examine the area of the hub that rides in the seal for signs of abnormal wear or scoring. For many popular engines, a repair sleeve is available to restore a smooth finish to the sealing surface. Check with your auto parts store.

    A:
Coat the lip of the new seal with clean engine oil and drive it into the bore with a socket or large piece of pipe slightly smaller in diameter than the seal. The open side of the seal faces into the engine. Install the crankshaft pulley (see Step 4 above).

    Q:
How do you remove the bolt from the center of the crankshaft pulley for the 1997 Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the bolt from the center of the crankshaft pulley. You'll most likely have to prevent the crankshaft from turning. Remove the torque converter access cover and wedge a large screwdriver between the teeth of the starter ring gear, allowing the screwdriver to rest against the transmission housing. Two other methods include holding an extension through one of the holes in the crankshaft pulley and against the block, or using a strap-type wrench around the circumference of the pulley.

    Q:
How should the new rear seal be positioned and driven in for the 1996 Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Position the seal in the bore with its open end facing IN and drive it in with a seal driver until it is securely seated. Use a socket or piece of pipe the same diameter as the seal if a seal driver isn't available.

    Q:
What additional steps are required to remove the timing chain cover for the 1996 Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
    1. Drain the cooling system. 2. Remove the engine cooling fan and radiator. 3. Detach the air conditioning compressor and bracket (if equipped) and set them aside. DO NOT disconnect any refrigerant lines! 4. Remove the oil pan. 5. Remove the water pump. 6. Remove the heater and radiator hoses as needed to provide removal access for the timing chain cover. 7. Remove the brackets, studs, and cover bolts. Note: The bolts are different lengths, and bolts and studs go in different locations. Label them so they can be installed in the correct location. 8. Take the cover off. If it's stuck, tap it lightly with a soft-face hammer or pry it carefully to break the gasket seal. Don't use excessive force or you'll crack the cover. If it's difficult to remove, check to make sure you've removed all the bolts.
