    Q:
How to remove and install a Fuel Pump on Mercury Mariner? Posted by Customer
    A:
The fuel level sender can be separated from the fuel pump module and replaced on 2009 and later models. To do this, first relieve the residual pressure in the fuel system and equalize tank pressure by removing the fuel filler cap. Then, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and fold the rear seat cushion forward if necessary. Remove the carpeting covering the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module access cover, and then remove the access cover. Clean the surrounding area to prevent introducing water, dirt, and dust into the tank. Disconnect the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module electrical connector and the fuel line connection(s) if applicable. Also disconnect the electrical connector for the fuel pressure sensor. Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines from the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module, and soak up any spilled fuel with a rag. Unscrew the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module retaining ring, and if necessary, use a hammer and a brass punch to loosen it. Carefully remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module from the fuel tank, taking care not to bend the sending unit float arm. If only the fuel level sender needs to be replaced on 2009 and later models, disconnect its wiring harness from the fuel pump module, then depress the locking tabs and remove the sender. Before installing the pump, inspect the neoprene gasket for wear and damage, and replace it if necessary. Also inspect the fuel pump inlet filter at the base of the pump and clean it if dirty. Align the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module with its hole in the tank and carefully insert it into the tank, making sure not to damage the float arm. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal. After reconnecting the battery, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum driveability and performance.
