1. Oxygen sensors have a permanently attached pigtail and an electrical connector that cannot be removed. Damaging or removing the pigtail or electrical connector will render the sensor useless. 2. Keep grease, dirt, and other contaminants away from the electrical connector and the louvered end of the sensor. 3. Do not use cleaning solvents of any kind on an oxygen sensor. 4. Oxygen sensors are extremely delicate. Do not drop a sensor or handle it roughly. 5. Make sure that the silicone boot on the sensor is installed in the correct position. Otherwise, the boot might melt and it might prevent the sensor from operating correctly.

It is difficult to loosen an oxygen sensor when the engine is cold because it is installed in the exhaust manifold or pipe.

The upstream and downstream oxygen sensors are located in relation to the two smaller catalysts, which are integrated into the exhaust manifolds.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. 2. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield. 3. Disconnect the upstream oxygen sensor electrical connector. 4. Unscrew the upstream oxygen sensor using an oxygen sensor socket. 5. Apply anti-seize compound if reinstalling the old sensor. 6. Install the sensor and tighten it to the specified torque. 7. Reconnect the battery and allow the PCM to relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy.

Installation is the reverse of removal, and be sure to tighten the upstream sensor to the specified torque.
