Q:
How to remove and install an ignition switch on Lincoln Continental? Posted by Customer
A:
Removal begins with disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Next, remove the steering column covers and the knee bolster. On 1996 and earlier models, remove the retaining nuts and lower the column for access to the switch screws. On 1997 and later models, remove the metal reinforcement panel just behind the knee bolster for access to the switch. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector. Turn the ignition key lock cylinder to the Run position. Remove the two switch retaining screws. Some Ignition switches are secured by special tamper-proof Tone screws. Finally, disengage the ignition switch from the actuator pin. For installation, make sure the actuator pin slot in the new ignition switch is in the Run position. A new replacement switch assembly will be set in this position. Place the new switch in position on the actuator pin and install the retaining screws. It may be necessary to move the switch back and forth to line up the screw holes. Connect the electrical connector to the switch. Install the upper steering column cover. Raise the steering column into position and install the retaining nuts. Tighten the nuts securely. Install the steering lower column covers and lower insulator panel. Finally, connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.
