Ford Bronco II Ignition Switch

The Ignition Switch in Ford Bronco II vehicles plays the major role in the ignition and charging function and encompasses the starting structure of the vehicle's engine and the electric facilities such as radio, power windows among others. The Ignition Switch when operated with a key, button or remote sends the signal to the vehicle computer which in turns switches on the starter solenoid and other parts of the ignition system to start the engine. In the course of its production, seven distinct styles of Ignition Switches have been used in Ford Bronco II ranging from the mechanical key to the push button keyless options. Whereas the first one needs a physical key to open the system, the second one still demands a transponder signal to turn on the system. However, the basic function of the Ignition Switch has not changed and repairing the switch is also uncomplicated and characteristics of a plug and play kind required for Ford Bronco II automobiles only.

Ford Bronco II Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the ignition switch on Ford Bronco II?
A: To replace the ignition switch in the 1983-88 models, turn the lock cylinder key to the Lock position and then turn the negative terminal of the battery. According to the model the upper extension shroud can be detached by squeezing it at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions for tilt columns. Next, the two trim shroud halves can be removed by releasing those two attaching screws, and by disconnecting the ignition switch electrical connector. Remove the break-off head bolts that interconnect the switch with the lock cylinder housing by a ¼ in. screw, followed by the removal of the two bolts with an Ex-3 Easy-out tool or any of its equivalent or betterment. Remove the contacts between the actuator pin and the ignition switch. To install, insert the ignition key into the start position and then turn the key to the run position, the replacement switch hole should fit into a lock cylinder hole, and make sure that the actuator pin fits into an 'U' shaped slot on the carrier switch. Put new break-off head bolts and fasten until the heads shear off, join the electrical connector, and reconnect the negative battery terminal, check ign switch before fitting the steering column trim shrouds. For 1989-90 models remove the negative battery cable and the steering wheel as well as any dash panel which might be required. If needed adjust the steering column down, remove the connectors from the ignition switch and unscrew the retaining screws. Pull the ignition switch out of the switch rod and extract it from the car. To install, position the lock cylinder in the LOCK position and set the switch by inserting a wire in the opening till it drops into the slot, position the ignition switch on the studs of the column and over the actuating rod and tighten the nut to 35-75 inch lbs. Last but not the least turn off the device remove the wire from the slot and do the rest of the process in reverse.
