Ford Bronco II Turn Signal Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the turn signal switch on Ford Bronco II?
A: To replace the turn signal switch on 1983-88 models you will need to pull the turn signal switch out before putting it back in. For tilt column models, the upper extension shroud can be detached at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions and pulled upwards by gripping at the 3 o'clock position with the retaining plate. Secondly, remove the two trims shroud halves by the two screws that is used to attach the two halves. Pull and twist the turn signal switch lever while pulling it straight out from the switch lever assembly and remove it. Remove the foam sight shield that covers the circuit turn signal switch and this can be done by coming out the two electrical connectors. Take off the two self-tapping screws so as to demount the turn signal switch from the lock cylinder housing and disengage it from the housing. For installation, place the turn signal switch in such a manner that the holes on the switch correspond with the holes on the lock cylinder housing after which you have to fix the two self-tapping screws. Place the foam sight shield back on the turn signal switch and set the turn signal switch by fitting the key on the switch over the keyway on the switch lever and sliding the lever towards the switch until it is fully engaged. Connect back the two electrical connectors and get back the steering column trim shrouds. It is for 1989-90 models; it will begin with taking out the steering wheel and then withdrawing the negative battery cable. If the vehicle is fitted with a tilt wheel, then dismantle the tilt lever and the steering column collar which should be pressed from the top and from the bottom. Take out the ISM panel trim cover retaining screws and the trim cover. Pinch the rear of the steering column shroud and swing it up to reveal the bottom of the shroud Pull down the bottom half and towards the back of the car. If the above vehicle is fitted with an automatic transmission, then change the position of the shift lever to facilitate shroud removal; pull the upper part of the shroud off the column. Remove the selector indicator actuation cable from the column casting with a screw and the plastic plug at the end of the cable. When withdrawing the plastic plug from the shift lever socket casting, it is required to press on the nose of the plug until it is disconnected from the casting head and pulled out. Take out the plastic clip which locks the turn signal switch wiring to the steering column bracket, then unthread the two screws that secure the turn signal switch to the steering column casting and release the switch. Remove the three electrical connectors, being careful not to snap the locking tabs on the PRNDL cable. Installation is basically the reversal of removal taking usual care to tighten the turn signal switch retaining screws to 18-27 in. lbs.
