Q: How to remove and install a steering column on Ford Edge?
A: Park the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the Steering Wheel and tape the airbag clock spring to prevent it from turning. If this is not done, the airbag clock-spring could be damaged. Remove the steering column covers. Remove the knee bolster and reinforcement. If the vehicle is equipped with an in-vehicle temperature sensor, disconnect the electrical connector and hose from the sensor. Disconnect the electrical connectors from both sides of the column, then detach the retainer holding the wiring harness and position the harness out of the way. Remove the cover from the lower steering shaft joint. Make a match-mark on the steering column shaft as it relates to the steering gear extension shaft. Remove and discard the pinch bolt from the clamp below the U-joint and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear extension shaft. Remove the four steering column mounting fasteners. Lower the column and pull it to the rear, making sure nothing is still connected, then remove the column.Installation: Guide the steering column into position, engaging the U-joint with the bottom of the steering shaft, then install the steering column mounting fasteners and tighten them to the torque. An assistant will be very helpful in this procedure. Connect the U-joint to the steering gear extension shaft. Install a new pinch bolt, tightening it to the torque. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
