Q: How to remove and install an oil cooler in a Ford Excursion?
A: Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Drain the engine coolant and the engine oil. For gasoline engines, remove the oil filter and disconnect the two coolant hoses, then unscrew the threaded insert from the oil cooler. The oil cooler is attached to the engine by the same large threaded insert that the oil filter is screwed onto. Remove the oil cooler insert and remove the oil cooler assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal. For 7.3L diesel engines, remove the oil filter. Remove the front oil cooler header. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector and remove the rear oil cooler header. Remove the oil cooler and headers as a single assembly. Pull off the headers and remove and discard the old 0-rings. Be sure to use new 0-rings and tighten all header bolts to the torque. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. For 6.0L and 6.4L engines, remove the intake manifold. Unbolt and remove the cover from the EGR cooler port. Unbolt and remove the oil filter adapter. Remove the bolts from the oil cooler and lift it off the engine. Remove the oil strainer screen, inspect it for damage and clean it. Installation is the reverse of removal. Always use a new gasket for the oil cooler.
