  • Q: How to remove and install the shift cable on Ford Excursion?
    A: To change shift cable out and put new one in, this cable needs to be disconnected from the steering column shift tube lever and the steering column bracket, in addition to that the rubber grommet and the shift cable must be passed through the firewall. Lift the car and then support it using jackstands, then unscrew the shift cable from the manual lever positioned near the transmission and from the cable bracket also. The procedure of installation is the same as the removal process only that extra caution is taken to ensure the cable is well fixed before being reconnected to the manual lever. For adjustment work inside the vehicle with the shift lever in the drive position then lift the vehicle and support on jack stands. With the shift cable disconnected from the manual lever, unlock the lock tab that is in the shift cable to another position, shift the manual lever to First gear and then back it two detents to Drive before reconnecting the shift cable. Secure the shift cable locking tab, remove the jackstands and drop the vehicle. Last, shift through all gear through the indicated positions with shift lever and check the actual position at needle on the manual lever to ensure that the engine star only in Park & Neutral, back-up light comes on when shift lever is in Reverse. If these conditions are not met it is necessary to fulfill them and it may be required to adjust the transmitted range sensor.
