Q: How do you remove and install a starter motor on a Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 2004 and later models, unbolt the frame-vibration damper, which looks like a small dumbbell, for starter access. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the starter solenoid cover if equipped. Disconnect the large cable from the terminal on the starter and the solenoid terminal connections. Remove the starter mounting bolt and nut, remove the electrical connectors, the upper mounting bolt and the lower mounting nut, then detach the starter from the transmission bellhousing and detach the starter from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Q: What are some troubleshooting steps for diagnosing starter problems on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Ensure that the battery is completely charged before diagnosing starter problems. Check if the switch operates the starter and if the shift lever is in either Neutral or Park. Ascertain that the battery is charged; and that all cables at the battery and starter solenoid terminals are secured. In case of a spin, with no engine turnover replace the starter. In addition, check the battery solenoid contacts or line connections when there is no response from your starter although its solenoid clicks. If not, then most likely you have got a discharged battery. Look at whether it was charged and afterwards inspect starter relay circuit or substitute for relay if so needed. Remove the electrical connector to test the starter relay circuit and ensure clean contacts with a firm connection. If by chance you have all these then simply use a jumper wire to test the operation of the relay. The starter is good if it works with a jumper wire. Otherwise, replace the solenoid as well as another attempt for starting should be made.
