Q: How do you remove and install a distributor on Mercury Cougar?
A: To remove the distributor, start by unplugging the primary electrical connector. Note the raised "1" on the distributor cap, which marks the terminal for the number 1 spark plug wire. Remove the distributor cap and, if you have a remote starter, follow the manufacturer's instructions to turn the engine over until the rotor is pointing towards the number 1 cylinder. If you don't have a remote starter, rotate the crankshaft until the rotor is pointing towards the number 1 plug wire terminal. Make a mark on the distributor base directly below the rotor tip and in line with it, as well as on the distributor base and the engine block for proper reinstallation. Remove the distributor hold down-bolt and clamp, then pull the distributor straight up to remove it. To install the distributor, insert it into the engine in the same relationship to the block as before. Check the alignment marks and rotor position, then turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation to engage the gears. Seat the distributor against the block and align the marks made on the distributor base and the block. Install the hold-down clamp, distributor cap, and module electrical connector. Reattach the spark plug wires and connect the Battery Cable. Finally, check the ignition timing and tighten the distributor hold-down bolt securely.
