Mercury Grand Marquis Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake shoes on a Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling. Release the parking brake. Remove the wheel. All four rear brake shoes must be replaced at the same time, but to avoid mixing up parts, work on only one brake assembly at a time. Follow the accompanying photos for the inspection and replacement of the brake shoes. Be sure to stay in order and read the caption under each illustration. If the brake drum cannot be easily pulled off, pry the rubber plug from the backing plate inspection hole and insert a screwdriver and a brake adjusting tool to lift the adjusting lever and rotate the adjusting screw. This will cause the brake shoes to pull together. Spray the assembly with penetrating oil and allow the oil to soak in if the mechanism is difficult to turn. The drum should now come off. Before reinstalling the drum it should be checked for cracks, score marks, deep scratches and hard spots, which will appear as small discolored areas. If the hard spots cannot be removed with fine emery cloth or if any of the other conditions listed above exist, the drum must be taken to an automotive machine shop to have it turned. Professionals recommend resurfacing the drums whenever a brake job is done. Resurfacing will eliminate the possibility of out-of-round drums. If the drums are worn so much that they can't be resurfaced without exceeding the maximum allowable diameter, which is stamped into the drum, then new ones will be required. At the very least, if you elect not to have the drums resurfaced, remove the glazing from the surface with medium-grit emery cloth using a swirling motion. Install the brake drum on the hub. Mount the wheel, install the lug nuts, then lower the vehicle. Make a number of forward and reverse stops to adjust the brakes until satisfactory pedal action is obtained.
