Using a micrometer, measure the camshaft bearing journals and compare your measurements. If they are out of specification, replace the camshaft.

Apply a little oil to the camshaft surface, then install each bearing cap to its previously noted position, ensuring the numbered side faces outwards.

Remove the camshaft locking plate and crankshaft timing peg, turn the engine two full turns, then replace the camshaft locking plate and crankshaft timing peg to confirm the engine is still set at TDC.

Remove the intake manifold.

Remove the camshaft seal and withdraw the camshaft, being careful not to damage the camshaft bearings and journals.

Remove the timing chain and sprockets.

Examine for signs of obvious wear or pitting and consult an automotive machine shop if any signs are evident. Also, check that the bearing oil ways in the cylinder head are clear.

Measure the inside diameter of each camshaft bearing and record the results by taking two measurements, 90 degrees apart, at each bearing. Additionally, use a micrometer to measure the camshaft bearing journals to determine if they are excessively worn or out-of-round. If they are more than 0.005-inch out-of-round, the camshaft should be replaced.

Install them in their original locations.

Press down on the plunger using a Phillips screwdriver to ensure it operates freely without binding.

Remove the valve cover, the timing belt cover, and the timing belt.

The removal procedure is difficult and involves special tools and the removal of the engine from the vehicle. It specifically covers the removal of the camshafts and camshaft bearing caps.

Measure the camshaft bearing journals with a micrometer to determine if they are excessively worn or out-of-round. If they are more than 0.001-inch out-of-round, the camshaft should be replaced with a new one.

Note the identifying numbers on the bearing caps and create a chart to match the bearing cap markings exactly as they appear. If the markings are illegible or missing, make your own. Caution: These bearing caps cannot be interchanged and must be replaced in their original positions to avoid engine damage.

This procedure requires the engine be removed from the vehicle.

Compare the results. If camshaft lobe lift is less than 0.005-inch for any of the lobes, cam lobe wear has occurred, and a new camshaft should be installed.

Remove the timing chains. If you're only removing the camshafts from the rear bank cylinder head, you only have to remove the rear timing chain. If you're removing the camshafts from the front bank cylinder head, both timing chains will have to be removed.

Measure the outside diameter at the top and bottom, and at right angles to the first set. If any measurement is significantly different, the cam follower must be replaced.

Install a new camshaft and repeat the check; if clearance is still excessive, the cylinder head must be replaced.

Mark the intake and exhaust camshafts to prevent reinstalling them in the wrong locations, then lift the camshafts straight up and out of the cylinder head.
