Mount a dial indicator to the front of the cylinder head and measure the camshaft endplay of each camshaft. If the clearance is greater than the value, replace the camshaft or the cylinder head.

Measure the outside diameter of each tappet at the top and bottom, then a second set at right-angles to the first. If any measurement is significantly different, the tappet is tapered or oval and must be replaced. If available, measure the inside diameter of the corresponding cylinder head bore.

Lubricate the new camshaft oil seal with engine oil and carefully tap it into place at the front of the cylinder head with a large socket and a hammer, ensuring it enters the bore squarely and seats completely.

Disconnect the negative cable at the battery.

Clean all bearing surfaces, install the camshafts and bearing caps with a strand of Plastigage across each journal, tighten the bolts, then measure the width of the compressed strands.

Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and cam lobes with engine assembly lube.

Camshaft bearing replacement requires special tools and expertise, so it is recommended to take the block (V6) or head (four-cylinder) to an automotive machine shop to ensure the job is done correctly.

1. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and cam lobes with engine assembly lube. 2. Slide the camshaft into the engine, supporting it near the block to avoid scraping or nicking the bearings. 3. Coat both sides of the thrust plate with engine assembly lube, then install it so it covers the main oil gallery. Tighten the bolts to the torque.

Remove the valve covers.

Install the camshaft thrust plate and tighten the thrust plate retaining bolts to the torque. Install the timing chain and sprockets.

To check the thrust plate for wear, install the camshaft in the cylinder head and position the thrust plate at the rear. Use a dial indicator to check the total endplay by prying the camshaft carefully back-and-forth. If the endplay is outside the limit, replace the thrust plate with a new one.

Replace the camshaft and all the lifters or followers.

Slide the camshaft into position, being careful not to scrape or nick the bearings.
