Replace the shocks as a set if leakage is present.

The strut is separated from the steering knuckle by removing the strut to steering knuckle nuts and bolts.

Locate the upper retaining nut for the shock absorber on top of the frame and remove the nut, washer, and insulator. Compress the shock absorber to clear the hole in the frame and remove the inner insulator and washer. On certain models, open the trunk, remove the side trim panel, and remove the upper mounting nut from the shock absorber rod. Remove the lower retaining nut or bolt and remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.

Extend the shock absorber, insert the lower shock stud through the hole in the bracket on the axle tube, install a new self-locking retaining nut, and tighten it to the specified torque.

If any free play is noted, check the steering gear mounts and the tie-rod ends for looseness. Verify the steering gear mount bolt tightness. If the tie-rods are loose, the ball joints may be worn.

If any components of the assembly are worn or damaged, have the unit serviced by a qualified repair shop, or replace it with a rebuilt or new unit.

All fasteners should be tightened to the specified torque.

For 2003 and later models, remove the three shock absorber upper mounting nuts, the brake caliper, and the brake disc. Additionally, remove the upper and lower stabilizer bar links. Remove the upper balljoint nut and separate the control arm from the steering knuckle. Finally, remove the lower mounting bolt and the shock absorber/coil spring assembly from the front end of the vehicle.

Depress the retainer ring(s) and pull the air lines free.

Grasp each front tire at the front and rear edges, push in at the front, pull out at the rear, and feel for play in the steering system components.
