There are two main types of universal joints.

Using sockets or pieces of pipe of suitable diameter, use a vise to press on the end of one cup and to displace the opposite one into the larger socket wrench or pipe.

To check if the needle bearings are worn with the driveshaft in position: 1. Try to turn the shaft with one hand while holding the rear axle flange with the other hand when checking the rear universal joint, and the front half coupling when checking the front universal joint. 2. Any movement between the driveshaft and the front half couplings, and around the rear half couplings, indicates considerable wear.

The "double cardan" type of universal joint is used in 4x4 models where high torque loads and steep drive-line angles are encountered, such as in Broncos and some pick-ups.

Clean the yoke and inspect for damage or cracks.
