Mark the positions of the bolt heads.

When disassembling the strut assembly, the upper bearing assembly should be inspected for smooth operation. Any signs of it not turning smoothly or cracking and deterioration in the rubber portion may indicate the need for replacement.

Raising the axle so that the shock compresses to the reference mark simulates the position of the vehicle's suspension when it's sitting at normal ride height, ensuring proper shock absorber installation.

To check the shock absorbers, park the vehicle on level ground, turn off the engine, and set the parking brake. Push down at one corner of the vehicle and release it while observing the movement of the body. It should stop moving and come to rest in a level position within one or two bounces.
