Q:
How to remove and replace the upper control arm on a Lincoln Town Car? Posted by Customer
A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, support it securely on jackstands and remove the wheel. For 1991 and earlier models, remove the cotter pin from the upper balljoint stud and loosen the stud nut one or two turns. To detach the upper end of the shock absorber from 1992 and later models, remove this nut, then remove the large washer under it and the bushing under the washer. Place a floor jack under the lower control arm and raise it slightly. Rap on the steering knuckle near the upper balljolnt stud with a hammer to loosen the stud in the steering knuckle. If the stud won't come loose, you might have to resort to a "picklefork" type of balljoint stud separator. Remove the nut from the upper balljoint stud. Remove the upper control arm pivot shaft attaching bolts. Remove the upper control arm and pivot shaft as an assembly. For 1992 and later models, position a floor jack under the lower control arm. Remove the pinch bolt and nut that retain the upper balljoinl stud to the steering knuckle. Using a prybar, spread the slot in the steering knuckle far enough apart to separate the balljoint stud from the knuckle. Remove the upper control arm retaining bolts and remove the upper control arm assembly. Inspect the control arm bushings for cracks and tears. If they're damaged or worn, take the control arm to an automotive machine shop to have new bushings installed. Position the upper control arm pivot shaft on the frame and install the two attaching bolts and washers. Insert the upper balljoint stud into the steering knuckle and install the ball stud nut or pinch bolt and nut. On pre-1992 models, continue to tighten the nut, if necessary, until the cotter pin hole in the stud is in line with the nut slots, then install a new cotter pin. Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle. Drive the vehicle to an alignment shop and have the caster, camber and toe in adjusted as required.
