To remove the intake manifold, you need to drain the cooling system and disconnect various hoses and cables. To identify and disconnect electrical and vacuum connectors. This requires removing the distributor to relieve fuel system pressure while disconnecting the fuel supply and return lines. For carbureted applications, this step will also require removal of the carburetor. It may be necessary to loosen clamps on these hoses and remove them from their connection points. The air intake plenum must be removed by unbolting coolant pipes if it is present. You should then proceed by loosening the lower intake manifold bolts and nuts as well as removing them completely. In this way, one can lift up the manifold checking that all bolts have been undone too. Use guide pins for installation together with sealant and gasket adhesive. Gaskets as well as end seals are required after cleaning mating surfaces.

Remove the PCV and canister purge hoses.

Drain the cooling system.

Start by relieving fuel pressure, disconnecting the battery cable, and removing the air intake plenum assembly on 5.0L engines or the air intake assembly on 4.6L engines. Use a special spring lock coupling tool to disconnect the fuel feed and return lines from the fuel rail assembly. Remove the four fuel rail assembly retaining bolts and carefully disengage the fuel rail from the fuel injectors. The installation process is the reverse of removal.

To remove the lower intake manifold, you should loosen and remove the lower intake manifold bolts and nuts, lifting the manifold from the cylinder heads with caution to avoid damage.

During installation, ensure the gasket mating surfaces are clean and free of damage. Tighten the throttle body mounting nuts to the specified torque.

Install the nine intake manifold bolts and tighten them to the torque following the correct tightening sequence.

The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.
