Ford Excursion Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor

The Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor is used in the Ford Excursion automobiles to monitor the temperature of the air that enters the cylinders hence dictate the rate of combustion process and general performance of the automobiles. All this information is communicated to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) who adjusts the fuel injector timing in order to enable the correct air fuel mixture under the right operating conditions. Intake Manifold Temperature Sensors used in several models of Excursion over the years may be different in some aspects as well as re-calibrated to match different modifications. Poor acceleration, stalling or an improper air/fuel mix are some of the problems that may be caused by for instance a faulty sensor, leading to the generation of a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) to the CHECK ENGINE light. Semi- monthly inspection of the air intake system is recommendable to eliminate chances of fake signals implying a problem in the engine.

Ford Excursion Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the location and function of the intake air temperature sensor on Ford Excursion?
A: The intake manifold temperature sensor is mounted in the air inlet system. Its exact location varies from year to year, but it always has two wires in its harness. The intake manifold temperature (IMT) sensor is a thermistor, which is a resistor that varies the value of its resistance in accordance with temperature changes. The change in resistance values will directly affect the voltage signal from the sensor to the PCM. As the sensor temperature decreases, the resistance values will increase. As the sensor temperature increases, the resistance values will decrease. A problem in any of the IMT sensor circuits will set a diagnostic trouble code. Make sure the ignition key is in the OFF position. Disconnect the electrical connector from the IMT sensor. Rotate the IMT sensor counterclockwise 1/4 turn and pull the IMT sensor from the air filter housing. Installation is the reverse of removal.
