Q: How to remove and install a receiver/drier or accumulator/drier in a Lincoln Town Car's air conditioning system?
A: Two different systems were used from 1970 through 1995. 1970 through 1979 used a receiver/drier with an expansion valve, while 1980 and later vehicles use an accumulator/drier with a fixed orifice tube. Removal: Have the system discharged by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning repair facility. Disconnect the cable at the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the refrigerant inlet and outlet lines. Cap or plug the open lines immediately. Remove the mounting bolt(s) and slide the receiver-drier assembly up and out of the mounting bracket. Installation: If you are replacing either a receiver or accumulator, drain the refrigerant oil from the old part. Add the same amount plus two ounces of clean refrigerant oil to the new part. This will maintain the correct oil level In the system after the repairs are completed. Place the new receiver or accumulator into position, tighten the mounting bracket screw securely. Install the inlet and outlet lines. Lubricate the O-rings using clean refrigerant and tighten the through-bolt and refrigerant line connections securely. Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by a dealer service department or an air conditioning repair facility.
