Loosen the main bearing cap bolts 1/4-turn at a time each, until they can be removed by hand. Note if any stud bolts are used and make sure they're returned to their original locations when the crankshaft is reinstalled.

Rub a penny across each journal several times. If a journal picks up copper from the penny, it's too rough and must be reground.

Check the crankshaft endplay with a feeler gauge or a dial indicator. The endplay should be correct if the crankshaft thrust faces aren't worn or damaged and new bearings have been installed.

Clean the back sides of the new main bearing inserts and lay one in each main bearing saddle in the block. Ensure the grooved insert is installed in the block if applicable.

Check the main and connecting rod bearing journals for uneven wear, scoring, pits, and cracks.

Mount a dial indicator with the stem in line with the crankshaft and just touching the end of the crankshaft. Push the crankshaft all the way to the rear and zero the dial indicator. Next, pry the crankshaft to the front as far as possible and check the reading on the dial indicator. The distance that it moves is the end play. If it's greater than the limit, check the crankshaft thrust surfaces for wear. If no wear is evident, new main bearings should correct the end play.
