Q: How to remove the steering gear from a Lincoln Navigator equipped with air suspension?
A: To take the rack and pinion out of an air-ride vehicle, turn off the air suspension system and raise the front of the vehicle on jack stands. If applicable, take off the skid plate and slide back the plastic cover protecting the U-joint. Mark where you see the U-joint is with the input shaft for the rack and pinion then remove that pinch bolt. Depending on what type of rack and pinion there is, disconnect either the center link or power steering hoses/hydraulic fluid lines. Also, remove the Pitman arm from recirculating ball-type gears but for rack and pinion-type gears, disconnect pressure line/return line(s) as well as unhooking tie rod ends. Additional steps may include Control Arm disconnection or removal of mounting brackets. Through the left wheel well opening, remove the rack and pinion assembly.
